New Accumulation Projections: Here's What Areas Will Get The Most Snowfall

New snowfall projections for the complex storm that will sweep through the Northeast show widely varying totals, with parts of the region seeing up to nearly half a foot but areas farther south and east expected to get just an inch or less of accumulation.

Higher accumulations will be farther north and west. (See first image above.) Dutchess County should get about 3 inches of accumulation, but more than a foot is expected is parts of upstate New York. (See second image above.)

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of the area from 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 until 6 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30. (See third image above.)

The storm will usher in a freeze-up and a new round of Arctic air.

A wintry mix is expected Tuesday afternoon, with areas farther south where the temperature will be well above freezing, seeing precipitation begin as rain. North of I-84, up to 2 to 4 inches of accumulation is possible before nightfall.

The entire region will see snow at night as the much colder air arrives. Snow will taper off just before midnight.

Then comes the freeze-up.

There will be scattered snow showers on Wednesday, with partly sunny skies and a high temperature of around 20 degrees, but the wind-chill factor between -5 and 5.

Thursday, Jan. 31 will be bitterly cold, with the high temperature of about 12 degrees.
